China is pushing for carbon neutrality by 2060, with ambitious goals for its hydrogen sector. Main areas of investment include mobility – with plans to ramp up annual production of fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) to 5 million by 2050 – as well as industrial applications such as decarbonising its steel and chemical industries. But the country’s infrastructure and domestic technologies are not yet sufficiently developed. And, currently, only 3% of its hydrogen production falls under the “green” category, with a goal to increase this to 80% by 2050.
