Biogas-to-clean energy deal secured in Korea for US hydrogen innovator

Biogas-to-clean energy deal secured in Korea for US hydrogen innovator

Our team in Seoul has helped secure a landmark agreement between our hydrogen energy client, Utility, and GH EnA, the South Korean industrial decarbonisation pioneer.

This will see the two companies collaborate on many projects in South Korea to produce clean, affordable, carbon-negative hydrogen from biogases for the country’s mobility sector.

Texas-headquartered Utility has developed ground-breaking technology to produce hydrogen from water. Utility uses the electrochemical energy in various gases, for example, wastewater treatment biogas or off-gases from hard-to-abate industries including steel, petrochemicals and oil and gas production.

GH EnA is a Korean engineering corporation which specialises in energy transition – leading commercial projects involving hydrogen fuel cells, biogas power generation and other technologies to bring clean energy to South Korea.

The joint development agreement will support Korea’s Hydrogen Economy Roadmap to achieve carbon neutrality and reduce the country’s reliance on imported fossil fuels.

The commercial deal signed by both companies covers projects deploying Utility’s H2Gen hydrogen plants in Korea. The initial projects include Chuncheon, Taebaek, Hongcheon, Sokcho, Yangyang, Goseong and Inje. And the first will produce hydrogen to power buses and heavy-duty commercial transport vehicles.

GH EnA will take the lead with project development, with Utility providing its reactors as well as technical and commercial support.

Having run business development initiatives for Utility in Korea and Japan since early 2023, we helped to achieve this agreement by capitalising on our market insights and industry connections in Korea.

It’s the third deal we’ve secured for Utility in the country, following agreements with industrial group Hanwha Corporation and a major gas company.

Claus Nussgruber, Utility’s CEO, said: “Our agreement with GH EnA is significant as it will kick-start installations of our systems across South Korea to produce clean, affordable hydrogen and help the country move to a sustainable energy future.

Intralink’s team in Seoul played a pivotal role in securing the deal, as they have with the other business agreements we’ve signed in Korea. We’ve particularly valued their support in building strong relationships with South Korean leaders in the hydrogen economy and energy transition.”
